Transitioning to College: Erika V.

A First-Generation Student Perspective

“My first semester at Maryville University has been one of the biggest transitions in my life, but it’s been one of the best ones yet.”

Q: Were you ready to head off to college?
A: The feeling of being on my own was a bit scary at first. Self-doubt was a battle. I questioned if I would be able to handle the challenges given to me.  However, I have learned that I am capable of so much more than I give myself credit for. I am also lucky to have met so many amazing new people through clubs, classes, and social events.

Q: Are you involved in any clubs?
A: Right now, I am involved in a club known as Latinas Unidas. I have been in many clubs in the past, but none have made me feel so included and accepted like this one.

Q: How are your classes?
A: My classes have been going great as well. Since I am an Interactive Design major, I have done many art projects that have allowed me to learn so much more about graphic design.
Q: Overall, how has your college experience been thus far?
A: I am very happy with my choice of going to Maryville, it feels like home to me.

This semester, Erika was part of a collaborative research team that collected and analyzed data on mass school shootings. She then presented their findings at Webster University’s bi-annual student research conference, Research Across Disciplines (RAD).

Aaron T. Offered Co-Op with Altec Industries

We are thrilled to share the following message from Aaron Tucker, an ACCESS alumnus.

“I am a sophomore at Missouri University of Science & Technology in Rolla, MO, earning my Bachelors of Science in Engineering Management with an emphasis in Information Technology. College was quite a challenge for me as far as transitioning into a new phase in my life. However, in the face of adversity, I remained confident and am now not only succeeding but I feel like I am thriving. I have joined a fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and serve as the Philanthropy Committee Chairman, organizing fundraisers benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and head the Public Relations Committee. I also sing with an acapella group.
Next semester, I’ll be a Supply Chain/Materials Intern at Altec Industries in Elizabethtown, KY, as part of Altec’s Co-op Program.”
